Lincoln (2012)

The Oscar buzz is coming in strong on this one, but is it a fun time at the movies? No! But that’s okay. This Steven Spielberg biopic, on Abraham Lincoln, is a bit misleading. Most biographical pictures start at the beginning of the subjects life and ends at their death. This film doesn’t begin until after Mr. Lincoln’s first term as president and he appears to be in his 60’s or 70’s. The actual focus of the movie is on the elaborate process of getting a bill passed in congress, specifically the amendment to abolish slavery. This to me was a good thing. I am tired of watching a broad story on a persons entire life and would rathersee a focused/detailed story on a small part of someones life.

I will say, that if I had no interest in the political process, I would have hated this movie. Anyone that claims “Lincoln” to be unbearably boring, isn’t neccessarly wrong, but if you are someone that could enjoy the movie that I have described here, then you will be satisfied. The acting is phenomenal and the films completes exactly what it sets out to do, but what it sets out to do is not for everyone. As far as the Oscar buzz goes, I don’t think this is the best movie of the year, but Daniel Day-Lewis does deserve to be in the running for best actor for his portrayal of honest Abe.     I give “Lincoln” 2 Citations up!
